RemWave® Contactless Vital Sign Monitor

RemWave® Contactless Vital Sign Monitor

Design a low-profile housing for a piece of proprietary health technology that allows users to track their vital signs and the quality of their sleep without needing to wear an obtrusive piece of wearable tech

Praesidium’s patented BioFi technology uses proprietary artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms along with state-of-the-art sensors to find and track human vital signs from a distance, through solid objects, and without any touch or contact with the person being monitored.

We were tasked with housing this technology and the PCB that enables it to work to ensure that the sensors were able to work to the best of their ability.

Concept Exploration

Inspired by wireless chargers, initial exploration explored a range of aesthetic forms and concepts that began to plant the seeds of how we could incorporate the necessary features. The broad exploration allowed us to gauge where the client wanted the product to fall on a spectrum from tech-forward to soft and friendly.

Three initial concepts were favored for further development, with the first concept drastically outweighing the other two.

The client’s first choice by far because of the elevated legs, aluminum wrapped edge, and subtle curvature from the top.

The client was not a fan of the narrow base form but intrigued by the features represented, such as the LED heart, push feature, and material split.

The client gravitated towards this soft, rounded, symmetrical form but was unsure how the radar technology would work with a concave top surface.

Concept Refinement

Concept refinement tightened our exploration based on initial feedback and considered key features necessary for optimal performance of the technology.

This design was selected for the subtle nod it gives to the Remwave technology from the top view and it’s elevated form.

Key features included:

  • A relatively flat top surface to maximize signal direction

  • Venting to cool the device on carpeted and hard surfaces

  • Minimal, unobtrusive buttons ensure the product is intuitive to operate but cannot be accidentally activated by kids or pets

  • A symmetrical aesthetic that will allow the user to place the device in any orientation

Detail Refinement

With a honed in form, we focused on refining the key details of the design, including treatment of the buttons and venting on the bottom, logo treatment, lighting indicators, and part design.

We discussed multiple part break strategies with the client that could achieve a variety of initial CMF options. In order to reduce the number of parts, we selected the simplest option that still maintained their desired aesthetic.

Refinement allowed the client to select from a very narrow set of final features to incorporate into the design intent.

We created a representative part break strategy and PCB stackup based on the selected design that was further refined by engineering and CM partners.

Design intent prototypes were assembled with molded and cast parts to be tested with the client’s PCB designs and validate the design.
